The story of the Recovery Pen begins not in a lab or boardroom, but in a home. In 1994, Dr. Chi Kyung Kim, a Korean engineer, developed a handheld healing tool to help his wife recover from a debilitating stroke. Combining his mechanical expertise with principles of East Asian medicine, he created a simple, non-invasive device she could use daily to support her recovery.

What began as an act of care soon grew into something far greater. As his wife regained comfort and mobility, Dr. Kim refined the device into what became the Genesen Pen—an integration of modern science and meridian-based principles designed to support circulation, tissue relaxation, and energetic balance throughout the body.

Over the following decades, the pen spread organically throughout Korea and across Asia, becoming widely recognized and trusted among patients and practitioners alike. More than 800,000 units have sold, with many of the first-generation devices still in use today.

Dr. Kim's work earned international recognition and awards, including from the President of Korea and the King of Belgium. Each Recovery Pen unit continues to be handcrafted in Dr. Kim's Korean facility, preserving the precision, materials, and standards that defined the original design.

In 2024, Nigel Earl—a South African philanthropist and close friend of Dr. Kim—acquired the worldwide rights to the Genesen technology and set out to remake the device for a new generation. Working closely together, he and Dr. Kim re-engineered the design, doubling the strength of the magnetic field, enhancing the compound that emits far-infrared energy and negative ions, and refining the ergonomics for daily use.

During this time, Nigel introduced the pen to Ryan Cairns, a former professional golfer whose career had been sidelined by chronic wrist pain. After incorporating the pen into his daily routine, Ryan returned to golf pain-free, moving better than he had in years. He soon joined Nigel in the work of bringing the device to a wider audience.

Tragically, Nigel passed away in 2025, just before the company's launch. In his place, Ryan saw it through, determined to honor what Nigel and Dr. Kim had built.

Soon after, American entrepreneur Brooke Busha discovered the pen following over a dozen surgeries and spinal cord damage resulting from a tumor more than three decades prior. The pen's effect was transformative—restored mobility, improved structural alignment, and a profound sense of calm after years of chronic pain and limitation. Convinced by his own experience, Brooke became one of the company's first investors, leading to a partnership with Ryan and bringing renewed structure, momentum, and vision to its next chapter.

Today, the Recovery Pen is headquartered in the United States and serves more than 50 countries. Led by Chairman Ryan Cairns and CEO Brooke Busha, the company continues to carry forward the vision of Dr. Kim and Nigel Earl while advancing the original technology through modern materials, clinical insight, and expanded applications.

What began as a tool to help one person heal has grown into a global movement—bridging Eastern wisdom and Western recovery science to support the body's natural ability to restore itself.
